Dear Savvy Club Member,
Thank you SO much for making sure we heard your concerns . . . we often think we have thought things through from your side, but evidently we have not so we REALLY appreciate you letting us know.
Here's the full story for you:
1. The Levels Program has always been about progressing from Level 1-4 (although until now we did not have Level 4 fully mapped out).
2. In 1992 we started to define the Levels and conduct 'tests', but this was all on a piece of paper defining what each level required. There were actually no videos or anything else to support this for a long while. So essentially you could only access the information and testing via clinics and courses with Pat, Linda or our Instructors.
3. In 1999 we produced the first Levels packs so students could study the material no matter where they lived and whether they could get to a clinic or not. We started with Level 1 and then each year we produced a new pack until Levels 1- 3 packs were all available with videos, theory and pocket guides. In each Level we walked you through the Four Savvys, but you had to do each Savvy to the degree that we showed you and in the order we revealed it. While this really helped many of you gain a lot of savvy, it was hard for others for a couple of reasons: firstly that you had to do it in the order we told you and the other being that some people needed to do a lot more on the ground before riding because they had a very challenging horse, or fear issues, or they weren't interested in the riding portion... or... or... or. So it didn't leave much room for you to adjust as needed and still find your way easily through the program. Of course we didn't realize that until much later
4. In 2004 Dr. Stephanie Burns helped us remake Levels 1 and 2 to be more true to Pat Parelli's goals of Level 1 being about Safety, Level 2 about Confidence (we never did get to Level 3) and to give you a lot more help on the learning side of things. But still, we were filming a Level 1 Course and a Level 2 Course in order to do this. So they emerged as better guides with many adjustments made for the early concept of Horsenalities (recognizing RB / LB tendencies) and for inspiring confidence in riders. Better, but still it was not 'IT'.
5. So this brings us to the present. We knew that we needed to fully define the Levels Program from 1-4 and figure out how to make it a more flexible learning model for you, no matter how confident or fearful, experienced or inexperienced with horses. And the big missing link was unveiling Pat Parelli's exercises (what you now know as the Patterns) that were for a long time part of Level 2 and 3 but in the remake they were destined for Level 3. Even then there were only four patterns, and they were all only Freestyle patterns.
Finally we got to focus on everything we have done and define exactly what the Parelli Program is and the best way to make it available for different learning styles and pace. So, after thousands of hours of work and many sleepless nights, that's what we've done. Instead of it being a 'horizontal' program, meaning you study a level at a time, it's now a 'vertical' program where you can study one Savvy at a time and advance level by level within that Savvy. This means you have the freedom to start with the Savvy in which you have the most confidence and then bring in the other Savvy's at the pace you want with the goal being to develop across all Four Savvys. Or, if you only play with horses on the ground - in the On Line and Liberty Savvys.
The ideal would be to start On Line and get to Level 2, then go through Liberty to Level 3, then FreeStyle to Level 3, and then begin your Finesse. That would be the absolute ideal way to develop a horseman. If you are already advanced in your Levels studies, you may find that taking your horse through the Patterns might expose some holes in your early development. The choice is yours... every which way you do it, you're going to make a lot of progress.
The Parelli Program defined:
* Put the Relationship First - Success Series shows you how to do that while learning the language of horses from the essential Seven Games to advanced concepts such as liberty, collection and flying changes.
* Study in Four Savvys - Parelli Patterns: On Line + Liberty + FreeStyle + Finesse (even if you only play with your horse on the ground, you should study the concepts of FreeStyle and Finesse to make your savvy well-rounded)
* Never-ending Self Improvement - Savvy Club. Every day in every way try to be a little better for your horse and yourself: in your knowledge, your savvy, your techniques, your mental, emotional and physical fitness. The best way we can support you on your journey is via the Savvy Club. This is a club dedicated to people who want to become savvy... so savvy that even your horse is impressed. We have SO MUCH to share and in this way we can stay in touch with what is important to you, keep delivering lessons and ideas, and way more quickly than by bringing out a new Levels product!
Here's how you will measure and achieve each Level in the Parelli Program:
You can progress along a clearly defined track and measure yourself at Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 in each Savvy, separately. Plus have the option to assess officially and achieve recognition via a certificate. Otherwise, you can self assess using the criteria on the Club website. You will also be able to see examples of what these Levels look like in each Savvy! In keeping with the system we've had since 1997, when you assess officially in all Four Savvys in one Level, then you are awarded a Savvy String as well.
As before, there is no pressure to achieve your Levels officially. You have the choice to assess officially or unofficially. The full details on this will be available before January 1st, but for now we're giving you a sneak preview of the checklist of tasks. If you still want to complete the last tasks you have on a level you've been working on, you can do it before Jan. 1 '09. But please don't stress about that... if you just have a few tasks left I would recommend waiting until January and working on your Patterns. The testing process from January is going to be WAY easier and better designed.
Only Savvy Club Members will get access to our Levels Program and be able to gain official recognition for their efforts and achievements.
In summary We are not going to release another Level 1, 2, 3... and if you have these packs already, you know the value of what is in there... they were more like doing a course at the Parelli Center. We will be progressively adding specific content from those packs to the Club website as students require it. Please also let us know what you feel would be valuable to include (requests can be emailed to
membersupport@parelli.com).
We have now; finally, for the first time in Parelli history completed and unveiled the Parelli Program from Levels 1-4, making it totally visible in all Four Savvys.
We have created a 'vertical' model for progression where you can study one Savvy at a time and take it from Level 1-4 (as you desire) and study one, two, three or all Four Savvys at the same time. It's up to you to decide how you want to do it. Grow your savvy . . . measurably.
You can self assess or do official assessments. Starting in 2009 there will be a modern, easier and more fun way to do official assessments. (Note: The current method of assessing is still in effect until January 1, 2009.)
Where we are now going to be putting our biggest effort is into the Savvy Club... to make this the most supportive and powerfully guiding program for horse lovers who are committed to never-ending self-improvement. Continued education is essential to growth and we want to give you monthly lessons and develop your knowledge via the Savvy Club DVDs and magazine, build an exciting on-demand library of questions, answers, demonstrations, problem solving, interactive community forums and Savvy Club Member Only events, etc. etc. We're so excited about it. Our Savvy Club Members will be our Number One focus from here on.
We know it must be hard sometimes, to be part of an evolving, world-changing system so we really thank you for your patience and flexibility in getting to here. And we especially look forward to seeing how much further and faster you are going to go as a result.
If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask. We try to anticipate your concerns, but whenever we've failed to do that please know it is not intentional. The last thing we want to do is upset or confuse you. We want you to live your dream with horses and figuring out how to do that on a worldwide scale has been our challenge and growing process for the past 25 years!
One thing you can always bank on is our motto: ?Good better best . . . Never let it rest . . . Get your good better and your better best.? I hope you are the first to challenge us when we get stale or stuck in the mud!
Yours Naturally ,
Linda & Pat Parelli
